- The Mekhitarian Armenian monastic complex on the Island of San Lazzaro in Venice is an important point of encounter between Eastern and Western, secular and religious, cultures. A place of study, as well as prayer, it hosts a renowned museum and library whose combined holdings include Near Eastern and Mediter-ranean antiquities.
- Robert Rauschenberg is one of America's most distinguished artists, winner of the Grand Prize of the Venice Biennale in 1964, much of whose creative activity has been devoted to the issue of human rights.
- Three bodies of work by Robert Rauschenberg are presented.

 Robert Rauschenberg, A Quake in Paradise,1994  Robert Rauschenberg, Darryl Pottorf, A Quattro Mani IV, 1996 | - The first is the large sculptural construction, "A quake in Paradise (Labyrinth)", 1995, consisting of 29 panels bearing images from the artist's journeys around the world, which is installed on the scenic overlook (belvedere) on the promontory of San Lazzaro.
- The second is "A Quattro Mani", a serial of four works made expressly for this exhibition using Venetian materials and executed in collaboration with the American artist Darryl Pottorf, installed in the monastery cloister.
- The third is the print series entitled "Tribute 21" (1995), the themes of which refer to universal concerns such as cultural preservation, social justice and the environment.
